Philosophy of Teaching and Affordable Materials:

I am primarily an educator.  I believe in setting educational goals that are high enough to provide a solid academic experience for average students while still challenging the gifted students. As a teacher, I offer help to students at all levels of achievement in my classes, and I will work with them to increase their ability to master the materials successfully. I see myself as part of a team, and I am willing to help coworkers achieve their own educational goals. I make use of the ideas and the expertise of other staff members, seeking their input when I approach a topic outside my area of expertise.

I also believe that the cost of textbooks has skyrocketed over the past ten years.  I search for affordable course materials (ACMs) wherever possible, and work with the skilled library staff at NEIU to obtain at least one hard copy of required books.  When there is a suitable and well-written textbook that is free under a Creative Commons licence,  I will opt for that book over an expensive one.  Education should be available to all and not limited by the affordability of the materials. Sadly, this is not always possible, but it remains a goal to strive for.

I also recognize that not everyone shares the same learning modality.   Although our library can't obtain licences for audio and ebooks of most materials, I do search for non-textbook materials (i.e., trade and popular press books) that are at least published in these formats.
